The Verdict of History

Name Date

Read and Think

Samaria fell in 722 BC after a three-year siege, and the ten tribes were scattered across Assyria. Kings pauses here for a sermon explaining why. The cause was not Assyria's strength but Israel's sin. The Lord who redeemed them from Egypt had been abandoned for idols.

The charge sheet is long: high places, pillars, Asherah poles, the golden calves, worship of the army of the sky, Baal, divination, and child sacrifice. Above all stands the patience of God. He testified by every prophet and seer, calling them to turn. Israel hardened their necks and rejected His covenant. They went after vanity and became vain, becoming like the idols they served.

The chapter ends with the mixed worship of the settlers, who feared the Lord and served their own gods. This is the origin of the later Samaritans. God's judgment was just, but it was not His last word. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks with a Samaritan woman and offers her living water, saying true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4:10, 23).
