Love and Truth Together

Name Date

Read the Story

The elder writes to the chosen lady and her children, whom he loves in truth. Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. The elder rejoices greatly to find some of her children walking in truth.

He reminds her of the commandment they had from the beginning, that we should love one another. This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments.

Many deceivers have gone out into the world. They don’t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. So watch yourselves, and remain in the teaching of Christ. The elder has many things to write, but he hopes to come and speak face to face, that their joy may be full.

Memory Verse

“This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, even as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.”

Remain in the Teaching

Name Date

Read and Think

Second John is a short letter from the elder to the chosen lady and her children. He loves them in truth, as do all who know the truth. He greets them with grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. He rejoices that some of her children are walking in truth, as the Father commanded.

He asks them to keep the old commandment: love one another. Then he defines love: This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. Love and obedience go together.

The elder warns that many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who don’t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Believers should watch themselves so they do not lose what they have worked for. Whoever remains in the teaching of Christ has both the Father and the Son. They should not welcome anyone who brings a different teaching. The elder plans to visit rather than write with paper and ink.

Truth That Remains

Name Date

Read and Think

The elder writes to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not I only, but also all those who know the truth, for the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever. Truth here is not only correct ideas but a shared life in Christ that lasts. Grace, mercy, and peace will be with them from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, in truth and love.

The elder rejoices greatly that some of her children are walking in truth. He asks that they love one another, not as a new commandment, but the one they had from the beginning. He explains: This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. Love is shown by obedience, and obedience is the way of love.

He warns that many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who don’t confess that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. Watch yourselves, he says, that we don’t lose the things which we have accomplished, but that we receive a full reward. Whoever goes beyond and doesn’t remain in the teaching of Christ doesn’t have God. Believers should not give such teachers a welcome that would share in their evil works. The elder closes by saying he would rather speak face to face, that our joy may be made full.

Show What You Know

  1. How long will the truth be with them?

  2. How are love and obedience connected?

  3. What do the deceivers fail to confess?

  4. What does the elder hope believers receive?
