2 Chronicles 7 · Grade 5
God's Answer
Read and Think
God answered Solomon's prayer in two ways. First he answered in public. Fire fell from heaven on the offerings, as it had at the tabernacle and at David's altar (1 Chronicles 21:26). The glory filled the house, and the people bowed and confessed that Yahweh is good and his loving kindness endures forever.
Second, God answered in private, appearing to Solomon at night. He had chosen and made the house holy, and his eyes and heart would be there perpetually. When trouble comes, the way back is clear: if his people humble themselves, pray, seek his face, and turn from their wicked ways, he will hear, forgive, and heal their land.
God set two paths before Solomon. If he walked before God as David did, his throne would be established. If Israel forsook God, they would be uprooted and the house would become a proverb. In the New Testament, John writes that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us (1 John 1:9).
