2 Chronicles 33 · Grade 4

Then Manasseh Knew

Name Date

Read and Think

Manasseh began to reign at twelve and ruled fifty-five years, longer than any king of Judah. He did evil, following the practices of the nations Yahweh had driven out. He rebuilt the high places his father Hezekiah had broken down, built altars to Baal and to the stars in the courts of God's house, and set an idol in the temple itself.

Manasseh led Judah to do more evil than the nations. Yahweh spoke to him and his people, but they would not listen. So Yahweh brought the Assyrian army, who bound Manasseh in chains and carried him to Babylon. In his distress he begged Yahweh his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.

He prayed, and God was moved by his plea. God heard him and brought him back to Jerusalem. Then Manasseh knew that Yahweh was God. He removed the foreign gods and the idol from Yahweh's house, rebuilt the altar, and commanded Judah to serve Yahweh. His son Amon did evil and did not humble himself as his father had.

Grace for the Worst

Name Date

Read and Think

Manasseh is Chronicles' most dramatic picture of repentance. Son of faithful Hezekiah, he undid his father's reforms and went further into evil than any king before him. He placed idols in the very house where Yahweh had put his name and led Judah into worse sin than the nations God had driven out.

God spoke, and they would not listen. So discipline came. Assyrian commanders bound Manasseh and carried him to Babylon. There, he begged Yahweh and humbled himself greatly. God was moved by his plea and restored him. Then Manasseh knew that Yahweh was God. Discipline led to knowledge of God.

Manasseh's repentance bore fruit. He removed the idols, rebuilt the altar, offered thank offerings, and commanded Judah to serve Yahweh. His prayer was remembered and written down. No one is beyond the reach of God's grace. In the New Testament, Paul writes, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief (1 Timothy 1:15).

Show What You Know

  1. What did Manasseh undo?

  2. Where did Manasseh beg Yahweh?

  3. What did discipline lead to?

  4. What fruit did Manasseh's repentance bear?

  5. What does Paul write in 1 Timothy 1:15?
