Joash was seven years old when he began to reign. He did what was right in Yahweh's eyes all the days of Jehoiada the priest. After this, Joash decided to restore Yahweh's house.

The king had a chest made and set outside at the gate of Yahweh's house. They asked the people to bring the gift Moses commanded. All the leaders and people rejoiced. They brought gifts and filled the chest. Workers repaired the house and made it strong.

A Good Start

Name Date

Read and Think

Joash began to reign at seven and reigned forty years. He did what was right in Yahweh's eyes all the days of Jehoiada the priest. He decided to restore Yahweh's house and told the Levites to gather money from all Israel, but they were slow.

So the king commanded a chest to be made and set at the gate of Yahweh's house. A proclamation went out to bring the tax Moses had laid on Israel. All the princes and people rejoiced and cast their gifts into the chest until it was full. Workers restored the house to its proper state and made it strong.

When Jehoiada died at a hundred thirty, he was buried among the kings, for he had done good in Israel toward God and his house. Then the princes of Judah came and bowed to Joash, and he listened to them. They forsook Yahweh's house and served Asherah poles and idols. God sent prophets to bring them back, but they would not listen. Zechariah son of Jehoiada warned them, and they turned against him.

Borrowed Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

The first half of Joash's story is bright. Rescued as a baby and crowned at seven, he did what was right all the days of Jehoiada the priest. He led a project to restore Yahweh's house. When the Levites were slow, he set a chest at the temple gate, and the people rejoiced to give until it overflowed. The house was restored and worship continued.

The turning point is Jehoiada's death. He was buried among the kings, an honor no other priest received. Then the princes of Judah bowed before Joash, and he listened to them. Together they forsook Yahweh's house for Asherah poles and idols. Joash's faith had leaned on Jehoiada, and when the support was gone, he fell.

God was patient. He sent prophets to bring them back. The Spirit came on Zechariah, Jehoiada's son, who said, Because you have forsaken Yahweh, he has also forsaken you. Joash forgot the kindness Jehoiada had shown him and turned against Zechariah. The Syrian army then defeated Judah, and Joash's own servants rose against him. In the New Testament, Jesus mentions the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary (Luke 11:51).
