Relying on Yahweh

Name Date

Read the Story

Abijah began to reign over Judah. Jeroboam came against him with an army twice as big. Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim and spoke to Israel.

He said Yahweh gave the kingdom to David and his sons forever. Israel had golden calves and false priests. But Judah kept Yahweh's priests. They lit the gold lamp every evening. He said God was with them.

Jeroboam's men came behind Judah. Judah needed help. Judah cried to Yahweh, and the priests sounded the trumpets. Judah shouted, and God gave them the victory, because they relied on Yahweh.

Do Not Fight Against God

Name Date

Read and Think

Abijah was Rehoboam's son. He had four hundred thousand men. Jeroboam had eight hundred thousand. Before the battle, Abijah stood on a mountain and called out to Israel. Yahweh had given the kingdom to David's family forever by a covenant of salt.

Abijah said that Jeroboam had rebelled, driven out Yahweh's priests, and made golden calves for gods. But Judah had not forsaken Yahweh. Their priests offered incense and burnt offerings, set out the show bread, and lit the lampstand. He said God was with them at their head, and he warned Israel not to fight against Yahweh.

Jeroboam set a trap, and the battle was before and behind them. They cried to Yahweh. The priests blew the trumpets, and the men of Judah shouted. God struck Jeroboam's army before Abijah. The men of Judah prevailed because they relied on Yahweh, the God of their fathers.

Outnumbered but Not Alone

Name Date

Read and Think

Abijah reigned only three years, but the Chronicler records one great moment. Facing an army twice his size, he stood on a mountain and preached. The kingdom belonged to David's line by a covenant of salt, a covenant meant to last. Jeroboam's rebellion was not just against Judah, but against Yahweh's kingdom.

Abijah contrasted two ways of worship. Israel had golden calves and priests anyone could become by bringing an offering. Judah kept the priests of Aaron, the morning and evening offerings, the show bread, and the lamps. Then he warned the children of Israel not to fight against Yahweh, for they would not prosper.

When the ambush closed around them, Judah cried to Yahweh, and God delivered them. The key line explains why: they relied on Yahweh, the God of their fathers. Jeroboam never recovered strength, while Abijah grew mighty. In the New Testament, Paul asks, if God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31).

Show What You Know

  1. How long did Abijah reign?

  2. What did a covenant of salt mean?

  3. How could anyone become a priest in Israel?

  4. What explains Judah's victory?

  5. What does Paul ask in Romans 8:31?
