Train for Godliness

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul warned that some people would turn away from faith. They would follow false teaching. Some would say people cannot marry or eat certain foods. But Paul said everything God made is good. We should receive it with thanks.

Paul told Timothy to stay away from silly myths. He said to train himself to live for God. Exercise for the body helps a little. But living for God helps in every way, now and forever.

Timothy was young, but Paul told him to be an example. He should show others how to live by his words, life, love, faith, and purity. Paul told him to read Scripture to the church, encourage them, and teach. He told Timothy not to neglect his gift from God.

Young and an Example

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul warns that in later times some will fall away from the faith by listening to false teachers. These teachers forbid marriage and certain foods. But Paul writes that every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving. It is made holy by God's word and prayer.

Paul tells Timothy to refuse silly myths. Instead he says: Exercise yourself toward godliness. Exercise for the body has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for this life and the life to come. Paul's hope is set on the living God, the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

Timothy was young, so Paul encourages him: Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe. Timothy should be an example in word, way of life, love, spirit, faith, and purity. Until Paul comes, Timothy is to pay attention to reading, to exhortation, and to teaching. He should not neglect the gift God gave him, and he should give himself fully to these things so all can see his progress.

Godliness Has Value in All Things

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul writes: But the Spirit says expressly that in later times some will fall away from the faith. They will follow deceiving teachings spread by liars whose consciences are hardened. These teachers forbid marriage and command people to avoid foods God made. Yet Paul answers, For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, since it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.

If Timothy teaches these things, he will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith. Paul tells him to refuse silly myths and to train himself toward godliness. Bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now and of that which is to come. Paul says they labor and suffer because they have set their hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

Paul gives Timothy personal charges. Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe, in word, in your way of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity. Until Paul arrives, Timothy should devote himself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, and to teaching. He must not neglect the gift given to him when the elders laid their hands on him. Paul tells him to be diligent and give himself wholly to these things, so his progress is clear to all. By watching his life and teaching closely, he will help both himself and those who hear him.

  2. What makes what God created holy?

  3. What promise does godliness hold?
