1 Timothy 3 · Grade 4
The Assembly of the Living God
Read and Think
Paul writes: This is a faithful saying: someone who seeks to be an overseer desires a good work. No one should be able to rightly blame an overseer, self-controlled, sensible, welcoming to guests, and good at teaching. He must not be a drinker, violent, or greedy for money, but gentle and peaceful. He must manage his own household well.
Paul gives a reason: if someone cannot care for his own house, how can he care for God's church? An overseer should not be a new believer, or he might become proud. He should have a good reputation with outsiders, too.
Servants in the church must also be worthy of respect, honest, and not greedy. They should be tested first and then serve if they are blameless. Those who serve well gain good standing and great boldness in the faith. Paul writes so Timothy will know how people ought to act in God's house, which is the assembly of the living God. He ends with a song about Christ, who was revealed in the flesh and taken up in glory.
