Stand Fast in the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul explains that when he could stand it no longer, he decided to be left behind at Athens alone. He sent Timothy, our brother and God's servant in the Good News of Christ, to establish and comfort them concerning their faith, so that no one would be moved by these troubles. Paul had warned them ahead of time that believers would suffer affliction. He sent Timothy because he feared the tempter might have tempted them and his work would be wasted.

But Timothy has now returned with glad news of their faith and love. They have good memories of Paul and long to see him, just as he longs to see them. In all his distress and trouble, Paul was comforted because of their faith. He writes: For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.

Paul overflows with thanks. He asks what thanksgiving he can give to God for all the joy he has because of them. He prays night and day that he may see them and supply what is lacking in their faith. Then he prays: Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. He asks the Lord to make them increase in love toward one another and toward everyone, so that their hearts will be holy and blameless before God when the Lord Jesus comes with all his saints.
