Paul could not bear waiting any longer for news. He chose to stay in Athens alone and sent Timothy, our brother and God's servant in the Good News of Christ. Timothy's job was to strengthen and comfort them, so no one would be shaken by troubles. Paul had told them before that troubles would come.

Then Timothy returned with glad news of their faith and love. They remembered Paul kindly and longed to see him. Paul was comforted in all his distress. He writes: For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.

Paul asks what thanks he can give God for all the joy they bring. He prays night and day to see them again. He prays: Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you. He asks the Lord to make them grow in love for one another and for all people, and to make their hearts holy and blameless when Jesus comes.
