Like a Mother and Father

Read the Story

Paul and his friends had been treated badly in Philippi. But God made them brave to share the good news in Thessalonica. They did not use sweet talk to get anything. They spoke to please God, who tests our hearts.

Paul said they were gentle among the believers. They were like a mother caring for her own children. They loved the people so much that they shared their own lives. They worked night and day so they would not be a burden.

Paul also cheered them on, like a father with his children. The people accepted the message as God's word, not just people's words. Paul longed to see them again. He said, You are our glory and our joy.

Not to Please People

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul reminds the believers that his visit was not in vain. He and his friends had suffered and been treated shamefully at Philippi, yet they grew bold in God to share the Good News. Paul writes that they speak not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts. They never used flattery or tried to get money or praise.

Instead, Paul says, But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children. They loved the believers so much that they shared not only the Good News but their own lives. They worked night and day so they would not be a burden to anyone.

Paul also encouraged each believer, as a father does his own children, so they would live worthy of God. He thanks God that they received the message not as human words but as it truly is, the word of God. The believers also suffered, just as other churches did. Paul longs to see them again. He says they are his glory and joy.

Approved by God

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins by reminding the Thessalonians that his visit was not in vain. Even after being shamefully treated at Philippi, he and his companions grew bold in God to speak the Good News. Their message did not come from error or trickery. Paul writes: But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts. They never used flattery, never sought money, and never sought glory from people.

Though they could have claimed authority as apostles, they chose gentleness. Paul writes: But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children. They gladly shared not only the Good News of God but their own lives, because the believers had become very dear to them. They labored night and day so they would not burden anyone while preaching.

Paul reminds them how he encouraged and urged each one, as a father does his own children, to walk worthily of God, who invites them to share in His Kingdom and glory. He thanks God that they accepted the message as the word of God, which works in those who believe. Like other churches, they also suffered for their faith. Paul longed to see them, but Satan hindered us. He asks, For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? It is the believers themselves, before the Lord Jesus at his coming.
