The Crown of Glory

Name Date

Read and Think

Peter writes as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ. He tells elders to shepherd the flock of God willingly, not for dishonest gain, and not as lords over the people, but as examples. When the chief Shepherd is revealed, they will receive the crown of glory that doesn’t fade away.

Younger people should be subject to the elders, and everyone should be clothed with humility, because God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. Cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

Be sober and watchful. Peter warns that the devil prowls like a roaring lion. Believers should resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that brothers and sisters everywhere face the same sufferings. After a little while, the God of all grace will perfect, establish, and strengthen them. Peter sends greetings and ends with peace.

The God of All Grace

Name Date

Read and Think

Peter writes to the elders as a fellow elder, a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and one who will share in the glory to be revealed. Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, he says. Elders should serve willingly, not under compulsion. They should not serve for dishonest gain. They should not lord it over people, but be examples to the flock. When the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the crown of glory that doesn’t fade away.

Then Peter addresses younger people and the whole church. All of you should clothe yourselves with humility. For God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. Humility before God and care from God belong together.

Peter warns them to be sober and watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings. Then comes a promise. The God of all grace called them to his eternal glory. After they have suffered a little while, he will perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle them. Peter closes with greetings from Silvanus, from the church in Babylon, and from Mark, whom he calls his son.
