Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

1 Peter 1: A Living Hope

1 Peter 1 is written to God’s chosen people living as foreigners in many lands. Peter praises God, who has given believers new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ and an inheritance kept in heaven. Trials test faith like fire tests gold. The prophets searched to understand this salvation. Believers should set their hope on grace, be holy because God is holy, and love one another from the heart, because they were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ. All flesh is like grass, but the Lord’s word endures forever.

Chapter 2Preschool–Grade 5

1 Peter 2: Living Stones

1 Peter 2 tells believers to long for the pure spiritual milk so they may grow. Jesus is the living stone, rejected by people but chosen by God, and believers are living stones built into a spiritual house. They are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and God’s own people, called out of darkness into his marvelous light. They should live honorably, honor all people and follow Christ’s example in suffering. He bore our sins on the tree, and they have returned to the Shepherd of their souls.

Chapter 3Preschool–Grade 5

1 Peter 3: Seek Peace

1 Peter 3 gives instructions to wives and husbands, urging inner beauty, a gentle and quiet spirit, and honor in marriage. All believers should be like-minded, compassionate and humble, not paying back evil for evil but giving a blessing. Whoever loves life should keep the tongue from evil and seek peace. If believers suffer for doing good, they are blessed; they should always be ready to give a reason for their hope with gentleness. Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God. Noah’s family was saved through water, which Peter connects with baptism.

Chapter 4Preschool–Grade 5

1 Peter 4: Serve with Your Gifts

1 Peter 4 tells believers to arm themselves with the mind of Christ, who suffered in the flesh, and to live for the will of God rather than old desires. Former friends may think it strange and speak evil of them, but they will give account to God. Since the end of all things is near, believers should be sober in prayer, love one another earnestly, be hospitable without grumbling and use their gifts to serve one another. They should not be surprised at fiery trials, but rejoice to share Christ’s sufferings, and entrust themselves to a faithful Creator.

Chapter 5Preschool–Grade 5

1 Peter 5: Cast Your Cares on God

1 Peter 5 tells elders to shepherd God’s flock willingly and as examples, and promises a crown of glory when the chief Shepherd appears. Younger people should be subject to elders, and all should clothe themselves with humility, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Believers can cast all their worries on God, because he cares for them. They should be watchful, resist the devil firm in faith, and trust the God of all grace to restore, establish and strengthen them. Peter closes with greetings.
