Stewards of Grace

Name Date

Read the Story

Peter says Christ suffered in the flesh. So believers should live for the will of God, not for their old ways. Their old friends think it is strange that they do not join them anymore.

The end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer. Above all, be earnest in your love, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without grumbling.

As each has received a gift, use it in serving one another. Do not be surprised at fiery trials. If you suffer for being a Christian, do not be ashamed. Give glory to God, and trust yourself to a faithful Creator.

Memory Verse

“As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.”

The End Is Near

Name Date

Read and Think

Peter tells believers to arm themselves with the same mind that Christ had when he suffered. They should no longer live for human desires but for the will of God. Their old companions are surprised that they no longer join them, and speak evil of them. But those people will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

The end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer. Above all, be earnest in love. Be hospitable without grumbling. Each one has received a gift, and should use it to serve others as a good manager of God’s grace. Whoever speaks should speak as the very words of God, and whoever serves should serve by God’s strength, so that God may be glorified.

Peter tells them not to be astonished at the fiery trial that tests them. They share Christ’s sufferings, so they can rejoice, knowing they will rejoice even more when his glory is revealed. No one should suffer as a wrongdoer, but suffering as a Christian is no shame. Those who suffer according to God’s will should commit their souls to a faithful Creator by doing good.

A Faithful Creator

Name Date

Read and Think

Peter begins with the example of Christ. Since Christ suffered in the flesh, believers should arm themselves with the same mind. They should live the rest of their time not for human lusts, but for the will of God. They have already spent enough time on the ways of the nations. Former friends think it strange that they no longer run with them into the same excess, and they speak evil of them. Yet everyone will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

Because the end of all things is near, Peter calls for a sober and loving community. Be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer. And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms. Speaking and serving gifts both come from God, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

Peter then speaks frankly about suffering. Beloved, don’t be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you. They share in Christ’s sufferings, and if they are insulted for the name of Christ, they are blessed, because the Spirit of glory rests on them. A believer should never suffer as a wrongdoer or a meddler. But if one of you suffers for being a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this matter. Judgment begins with the household of God. Those who suffer according to God’s will should entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.

  2. What does Peter call believers who use their gifts?
