A Reason for Hope
Read and Think
Peter gives instructions about marriage. Wives can show their faith by pure behavior, and husbands should honor their wives and live with understanding. True beauty is the hidden person of the heart, with a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in God’s sight.
Then Peter speaks to everyone. Be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, and courteous. Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but bless instead. Peter quotes a psalm: He who would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil. Let him seek peace and pursue it.
Suffering for doing right is not a reason for fear. Believers should set apart Christ as Lord in their hearts and always be ready to answer anyone who asks about the reason for their hope, with gentleness and respect. Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God. Peter points to Noah’s family, saved through water, as a picture connected to baptism.
