Solomon loved God and went to Gibeon to worship. That night God appeared to him in a dream. God said, Ask for what I should give you. Solomon said that he was like a little child and did not know how to go out or come in.

Solomon asked God for an understanding heart to judge His people and to tell good from evil. God was pleased that Solomon had not asked for long life or riches. God gave him a wise heart, and also riches and honor. If Solomon walked in God's ways, God would give him long life too.

Later two women came to the king. Both lived in one house, and each had a baby. One baby died in the night. Each woman said the living baby was hers. Solomon gave a wise test, and the true mother showed her love. Solomon gave her the baby. All Israel saw that God's wisdom was in him.

Wisdom from God

Name Date

Read and Think

Early in his reign, Solomon loved the Lord and walked in the statutes of David his father. He went to Gibeon, the great high place, and offered a thousand burnt offerings. That night God appeared to him in a dream and said, Ask for what I should give you. Solomon remembered God's great loving kindness to David.

Solomon called himself a little child among a great people. He asked for an understanding heart to judge God's people and discern between good and evil. God was pleased because Solomon had not asked for long life, riches, or the life of his enemies. God gave him a wise and understanding heart, and also riches and honor that he had not asked for.

Soon a hard case tested this gift. Two women lived in one house, and each had a baby boy. One baby died in the night. Each woman claimed the living child. Solomon called for a sword and ordered the child to be divided. The real mother cried out to give the baby to the other woman so he would live. Solomon knew she was the mother, and the child was safe. All Israel feared the king, for they saw the wisdom of God in him.

An Understanding Heart

Read and Think

Solomon's reign began with love for God. He walked in David's statutes, though he still sacrificed at the high places, since the temple was not yet built. At Gibeon, after a thousand burnt offerings, God appeared to him in a dream with an open offer: Ask for what I should give you.

Solomon's answer is a model of humble prayer. He praised God's faithfulness to David, admitted that he was like a little child, and asked for an understanding heart to judge God's people. The request pleased the Lord. God gave him a wise and understanding heart, so that no one before or after would be like him. God also gave riches and honor, and promised long life if Solomon would walk in His ways.

The case of the two mothers shows this wisdom at work. With no witnesses, it was one woman's word against another. Solomon called for a sword and gave an order that would show what was in each heart. The true mother's love moved her to give up her claim so her son would live. Solomon gave her the child, who was never harmed. Israel saw that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice. In the New Testament, James says that anyone who lacks wisdom should ask God, who gives to all liberally (James 1:5).
