Love in Deed and Truth

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with wonder: See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! Believers are God’s children now. What they will be is not yet revealed, but when he appears, they will be like him. Everyone who has this hope purifies himself.

Jesus was revealed to take away sins, and in him is no sin. To this end the Son of God was revealed, that he might destroy the works of the devil. God’s children practice righteousness and love their brothers. Cain did the opposite, and his deeds were evil. Believers should not be surprised if the world hates them.

Love is defined by Jesus. By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. Love closes no heart to someone in need. Let’s not love in word only, or with the tongue only, but in deed and truth. When our hearts accuse us, God is greater than our heart.

  3. How do we know what love is?

  4. What comfort is there when our hearts accuse us?

Think About It

  1. What is one way you can love someone in deed, not only in words?

  2. How does being called a child of God change the way you see yourself?

Memory Verse

“By this we know love, because he laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.”
