Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

1 John 1: Walk in the Light

1 John 1 begins with the Word of life, which the writer and others heard, saw and touched. They announce it so that readers may share fellowship with them and with the Father and his Son Jesus Christ, and so their joy may be full. The message is that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. Those who walk in the light have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses from all sin. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous to forgive us.

Chapter 2Preschool–Grade 5

1 John 2: Jesus Our Advocate

1 John 2 says that if anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, the atoning sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. We know we know him if we keep his commandments and walk as he walked. Whoever loves his brother stays in the light. The writer encourages children, young men and fathers. Believers should not love the world, which is passing away. Antichrists have gone out, denying the Father and the Son, but believers have the anointing from the Holy One and should remain in him.

Chapter 3Preschool–Grade 5

1 John 3: Children of God

1 John 3 celebrates the great love of the Father, who calls believers his children. When Jesus appears, they will be like him, and everyone with this hope purifies himself. Jesus was revealed to take away sins and to destroy the works of the devil. God’s children do what is right and love one another, unlike Cain. We know love because Jesus laid down his life for us, so we should love in deed and truth, not only in words. God is greater than our heart, and his command is to believe in his Son and love one another.

Chapter 4Preschool–Grade 5

1 John 4: God Is Love

1 John 4 tells believers to test the spirits, because many false prophets have gone out. Every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and greater is he who is in believers than he who is in the world. Love is from God, and God is love. God showed his love by sending his only Son so we might live through him. Since God loved us, we ought to love one another. Perfect love casts out fear. We love because he first loved us, and whoever loves God must also love his brother.

Chapter 5Preschool–Grade 5

1 John 5: Victory Through Faith

1 John 5 says whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and loving God means keeping his commandments, which are not heavy. Faith overcomes the world. God has given testimony about his Son, and the testimony is that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life. The letter was written so that believers may know they have eternal life. God hears prayers asked according to his will. The letter ends, Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
