Read the Story

Bakers put a little yeast in dough. The yeast spreads. Soon all the dough puffs up.

Paul said sin is like yeast. A little sin can spread to many people. The church in Corinth had a sin they did not stop. They were proud. They should have been sad.

Jesus died to make His people clean and new. So Paul told them to clean out the old yeast. God wants His people to live in truth.

Christ Our Passover

Name Date

Read the Story

Yeast is tiny, but it spreads through a whole lump of dough. Paul asked, Don't you know that a little yeast leavens the whole lump? He meant that sin is like yeast.

A member of the church in Corinth had done a serious wrong. The church did nothing about it. They were even proud. Paul wanted them to be sad about the sin and to lovingly correct it.

At Passover, Jewish families cleaned all the old yeast out of their homes. Paul said that Christ is like the Passover lamb. He was sacrificed for His people. So they should live with sincerity and truth.

Memory Verse

“Purge out the old yeast, that you may be a new lump, even as you are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place.”

Clean Out the Old Yeast

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul had heard that a church member was living in serious sin, and the church was allowing it. Worse, the church was arrogant. Paul says they should have mourned. Sin in a church family is a reason for sorrow, not pride.

Paul uses a word picture. Just as a little yeast spreads through a whole lump of dough, one unchecked sin can affect the whole church. At Passover, Jewish families searched their houses and removed every bit of old yeast.

Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place. Because of Him, believers are a new lump. They should keep the feast with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Paul explains that the church should correct its own members, but God judges those outside.

Show What You Know

  1. Why should the church have mourned?

  2. What did Jewish families remove at Passover?

  3. Who was sacrificed in our place?

  4. Who judges those outside the church?

1 Corinthians 5 · Grade 5

Sincerity and Truth

Name Date

Read and Think

The Corinthian church had tolerated a serious sin in one of its members, one that even the surrounding culture found shocking. Instead of grieving and acting, the church remained puffed up. Paul directs them to remove the man from their fellowship. His goal is not cruelty but rescue, that the man's spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord, and that the church may be protected.

Paul's central image comes from Passover. Before the feast, Jewish households purged every trace of leaven. Yeast, working quietly through dough, became a picture of how sin spreads. Paul asks whether they know that a little yeast leavens the whole lump. Tolerated sin does not stay small; it shapes the culture of the whole community.

The gospel grounds his command. Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place. Believers already are unleavened in Christ, so they should become in practice what they are by grace, keeping the feast with sincerity and truth. Paul clarifies that he is not telling them to withdraw from unbelievers in the world. Church discipline concerns those inside the fellowship; God judges those outside.

Show What You Know

  1. What was Paul's goal in disciplining the man?

  2. Why did yeast become a picture of sin?

  3. What grounds Paul's command to purge the old yeast?

  4. Does Paul tell believers to withdraw from unbelievers in the world?

  2. Church correction is meant to rescue, not to punish. How can Christians correct one another in a way that is both truthful and gentle?
