1 Corinthians 5 · Grade 4
Clean Out the Old Yeast
Read and Think
Paul had heard that a church member was living in serious sin, and the church was allowing it. Worse, the church was arrogant. Paul says they should have mourned. Sin in a church family is a reason for sorrow, not pride.
Paul uses a word picture. Just as a little yeast spreads through a whole lump of dough, one unchecked sin can affect the whole church. At Passover, Jewish families searched their houses and removed every bit of old yeast.
Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed in our place. Because of Him, believers are a new lump. They should keep the feast with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Paul explains that the church should correct its own members, but God judges those outside.

Think About It
A little yeast spreads through the whole lump. How can a small wrong choice affect other people?
Paul wanted the church to correct sin out of love. Why is it loving to help a friend turn away from what is wrong?
Memory Verse
