The People Come Home

Name Date

Read the Story

All Israel was listed by family. Judah had been carried away to Babylon because they did not obey. Later some came home and lived in their cities again.

In Jerusalem there were priests and Levites. There were gatekeepers too. They guarded the gates of Yahweh's house on the east, west, north, and south.

The gatekeepers opened God's house morning by morning. Some Levites took care of the vessels, the flour, the oil, and the spices. Others made the bread. The singers were busy day and night.

Faithful in Small Jobs

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 9 ends the long family lists. It shows who lived in Jerusalem after the exile. Verse 1 says Judah had been carried away to Babylon because they did not obey. The first people back were Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants.

The gatekeepers had an office of trust. David and Samuel the seer had first set them in their work. They guarded the gates on all four sides, stayed around God's house at night, and opened it morning by morning (9:27).

Other Levites counted the vessels in and out, cared for the flour, wine, oil, and spices, and prepared the show bread every Sabbath. The singers were employed in their work day and night. The chapter ends by repeating Saul's family, which leads into the story of Saul's last day.

An Office of Trust

Name Date

Read and Think

The genealogies end where the Chronicler's first readers lived: in Jerusalem after the return from exile. Verse 1 sums up the past in one line: Judah was carried away captive to Babylon for their disobedience. Then verses 2-34 list who came back and settled, from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh, to the priests and Levites.

The gatekeepers receive special attention. They numbered two hundred twelve, and David and Samuel the seer had ordained them in their office of trust. Four chief gatekeepers were over the rooms and the treasuries. They stayed around God's house through the night and opened it morning by morning.

Other Levites had duties that sound ordinary: counting the vessels of service in and out, mixing the spices, baking in pans, and preparing the show bread every Sabbath. The singers were free from other service because they worked day and night. Every task, great or small, was part of worship. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much (Luke 16:10).

  1. What one line sums up the past in verse 1?

  2. How many gatekeepers were there?

  3. Who ordained the gatekeepers?
