The Tribe of Benjamin

Chapter 8 lists Benjamin's family. Benjamin's firstborn was Bela, and there were many more sons. Many of them were heads of fathers' households.

Some of these chief men lived in Jerusalem. Others lived in Gibeon. One family built the towns of Ono and Lod.

The list then follows the family of Ner and Kish. Kish became the father of Saul, the first king. Saul's son was Jonathan, and Jonathan's son was Merib-baal. Some of the family were archers with many sons and grandsons.

Benjamin and the House of Saul

Name Date

Read and Think

Now the Chronicler returns to Benjamin for a longer list. Benjamin's five sons are named in order. Bela was his firstborn. Many of their children's children were chief men who lived in Jerusalem (8:28).

Other Benjamites settled around Gibeon and built towns like Ono and Lod. The list is full of names that are not found anywhere else in the Bible. Each one mattered enough to be written down.

Verse 33 traces Saul's family: Ner, Kish, Saul, and Saul's sons, like Jonathan. Jonathan's son Merib-baal is called Mephibosheth in Second Samuel. The chapter ends with the sons of Ulam. They were archers with one hundred fifty sons and grandsons.

Show What You Know

  1. Who was Benjamin's firstborn?

  2. Where did the chief men of Benjamin live?

  3. What towns did some Benjamites build?

  4. What is Merib-baal called in Second Samuel?

  5. How many sons and grandsons did Ulam's family have?

Think About It

  1. Many people in this chapter are named only once in the Bible. How does it help you to know that God remembers people others forget?

  2. Saul's family is listed even though his reign ended sadly. What does that teach about God's care for every family?

Memory Verse

“Ner became the father of Kish. Kish became the father of Saul. Saul became the father of Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.”

Remembered by Name

Read and Think

Chapter 8 gives a second and fuller list of Benjamin, the small tribe that stayed with Judah. It names Benjamin's sons in birth order, then follows family branches through Ehud's line and the sons of Elpaal and Shimei. Many were heads of fathers' households throughout their generations who lived in Jerusalem.

The list matters because, after the exile, Benjamin and Judah were the main tribes that returned. Readers in the Chronicler's day could find their own families here. Even small notes, like the building of Ono and Lod with its towns, tie these names to real places they knew.

The chapter closes with the house of Saul. Ner became the father of Kish, Kish of Saul, and Saul of Jonathan and his brothers. Jonathan's son Merib-baal and his descendants are traced for many generations, ending with the sons of Ulam, archers who had many sons and grandsons. Saul's line was not erased; God remembered it.

Show What You Know

  1. Which tribe stayed with Judah?

  2. Why did this list matter after the exile?

  3. Which towns are named as built by Benjamites?

  4. Whose house closes the chapter?

  5. How did the sons of Ulam serve?
