1 Chronicles 8 · Grade 4
Benjamin and the House of Saul
Read and Think
Now the Chronicler returns to Benjamin for a longer list. Benjamin's five sons are named in order. Bela was his firstborn. Many of their children's children were chief men who lived in Jerusalem (8:28).
Other Benjamites settled around Gibeon and built towns like Ono and Lod. The list is full of names that are not found anywhere else in the Bible. Each one mattered enough to be written down.
Verse 33 traces Saul's family: Ner, Kish, Saul, and Saul's sons, like Jonathan. Jonathan's son Merib-baal is called Mephibosheth in Second Samuel. The chapter ends with the sons of Ulam. They were archers with one hundred fifty sons and grandsons.
Show What You Know
Who was Benjamin's firstborn?
Where did the chief men of Benjamin live?
What towns did some Benjamites build?
What is Merib-baal called in Second Samuel?
How many sons and grandsons did Ulam's family have?
Think About It
Many people in this chapter are named only once in the Bible. How does it help you to know that God remembers people others forget?
Saul's family is listed even though his reign ended sadly. What does that teach about God's care for every family?
Memory Verse
“Ner became the father of Kish. Kish became the father of Saul. Saul became the father of Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.”

Take It Home
For families: talk about these together.
- What does it show that Saul's family was still listed?
- Why did this list matter to people after the exile?
