1 Chronicles 7 · Grade 5
Sorrow, Strength, and Hope
Read and Think
This chapter gathers the northern tribes into a compact record. Issachar, Benjamin, and Asher are counted by their mighty men of valor, listed by genealogy for service in war. Naphtali receives only one verse, and Dan is not named at all, yet each listed family was remembered.
Ephraim's record includes a moment of grief. The men of Gath killed Zabad's relatives Ezer and Elead when they came down to take away livestock. Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his brothers came to comfort him. When another son was born, he was named Beriah, because there was trouble with his house.
From the same family came Sheerah, a woman who built Beth Horon the lower and the upper, and Uzzen Sheerah. The line then runs through ten generations to Nun his son, and Joshua his son. The family that had known trouble produced the leader God used to bring Israel into the promised land.
