The Tribe That Served God

Name Date

Read the Story

Levi had three sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Kohath's family included Amram, whose children were Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. Aaron's sons became the priests.

The chapter lists the high priests from Aaron's family. Then it names the singers. David set them over the music in God's house. Heman, Asaph, and Ethan led the songs.

The Levites did not get one big piece of land. The other tribes gave them cities to live in. They had fields for their animals too. So the Levites lived all over Israel.

Memory Verse

“They ministered with song before the tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting until Solomon had built Yahweh’s house in Jerusalem. They performed the duties of their office according to their order.”

Servants in God's House

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 6 traces the tribe of Levi, set apart to serve God. Levi's son Kohath had a son named Amram. Amram's children were Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. Verses 1-15 follow the high priests down to Jehozadak, who went into exile.

Verses 31-48 name the musicians David set over the songs. Heman stood in the center. Asaph was on his right hand, and Ethan on the left. Their family lines reach back to Levi. They served with song before the tent until Solomon built the temple.

Only Aaron and his sons offered on the altar. They made atonement for Israel, as Moses had commanded (6:49). The rest of the chapter lists the cities and pasture lands given to the Levites. These were spread across the tribes.

Set Apart to Serve

Name Date

Read and Think

The Chronicler gives Levi more space than any tribe but Judah. Worship mattered greatly to the exiles who came home. The chapter opens with the high priests from Aaron through Eleazar and Zadok. It goes on to Jehozadak, who went into captivity when Yahweh carried away Judah.

Verses 31-48 honor the musicians. David set them over the service of song in Yahweh's house. They served before the tent until Solomon built the temple. Heman, Asaph, and Ethan each have a line traced back to Levi. This shows their work was part of God's order.

Verse 49 says that only Aaron and his sons offered on the two altars. They made atonement for Israel, as Moses the servant of God had commanded. The chapter ends with the cities of the Levites, given by lot from every tribe. In the New Testament, Hebrews calls Jesus a great high priest who has passed through the heavens (Hebrews 4:14).

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Levi get so much space?

  2. Who was the last high priest listed?

  3. What does tracing the singers back to Levi show?

  4. What were Aaron and his sons to do?

  5. What does Hebrews 4:14 call Jesus?
