Trust and Turning Away

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 5 lists the tribes east of the Jordan. Reuben was Israel's firstborn, but because of a wrong he did, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph. Yet Judah prevailed above his brothers, and from him came the prince (5:2).

These eastern tribes had valiant men and large flocks. When they fought the Hagrites, they cried to God in the battle. God answered them because they put their trust in Him, and they lived in that land until the captivity.

Sadly, the story did not end there. They trespassed against the God of their fathers and turned away to other gods. So the God of Israel stirred up the kings of Assyria, who carried away Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh (5:25-26).

They Put Their Trust in Him

Name Date

Read and Think

The tribes east of the Jordan come next: Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. The chapter explains that Reuben, though firstborn, lost the birthright because of a wrong he did, and the birthright went to Joseph's sons. Judah, however, prevailed above his brothers, and from him came the prince.

Verses 18-22 show these tribes at their best. They had forty-four thousand seven hundred sixty valiant men, yet their victory over the Hagrites is credited to God: they cried to God in the battle, and he answered them because they put their trust in him. The Chronicler adds that the war was of God.

Verses 25-26 show them at their worst. They trespassed against the God of their fathers and turned to the gods of the peoples God had removed before them. So God stirred up Pul and Tilgath Pilneser, kings of Assyria, who carried them away. The same chapter shows both the blessing of trust and the cost of unfaithfulness.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Reuben lose the birthright?

  2. To whom is the victory over the Hagrites credited?

  3. Why did God answer them?

  4. Which kings carried them away?

  5. What two lessons does the chapter show side by side?
