1 Chronicles 4 · Grade 5

An Honorable Man Who Prayed

Name Date

Read and Think

The genealogy of Judah continues in chapter 4 with clans, towns, and trades: the house of linen workers, the potters who lived there with the king for his work, and many family heads. Lists like these remind readers that God's people were made up of real families in real places.

Verses 9-10 stand out. Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, though his mother named him with a word linked to sorrow. He called on the God of Israel with a bold prayer: that God would bless him indeed, enlarge his border, keep His hand with him, and keep him from evil so that he would not cause pain. The verse ends simply: God granted him that which he requested.

The chapter closes with Simeon, whose towns were around Beersheba. In Hezekiah's day some Simeonites searched for pasture, found rich land, and settled there after striking those living there (4:41-43). The Chronicler records it as part of how the tribes came to live where they did.
