From David to Zerubbabel

Name Date

Read the Story

King David had six sons born in Hebron. He was king there for seven years. Then he was king in Jerusalem for thirty-three years. More sons were born there, like Nathan and Solomon.

After David, Solomon was king. Then the list gives the kings of Judah. Each son was king after his father. Some were Asa, Hezekiah, and Josiah.

Later the people were taken to Babylon. Even then, David's family went on. One of his family was Zerubbabel. God kept His promise to David's family.

The House of David

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 3 turns to the family of David. Six sons were born to him in Hebron, such as Absalom. David was king in Hebron for seven and a half years. Then he was king for thirty-three years in Jerusalem, where Solomon and Nathan were born.

Verses 10-16 list the kings of Judah. Each one was the son of the king before. The list runs from Solomon to Hezekiah and Josiah. It ends with the last kings before the exile.

Verses 17-24 follow the family of Jeconiah, the captive, after Babylon. Zerubbabel, who later led people home, is named here. In the New Testament, Matthew lists Jeconiah, Shealtiel, and Zerubbabel in the family line of Jesus (Matthew 1:12).

  2. Where were Solomon and Nathan born?

  3. What do verses 10-16 list?

God Keeps the Line of David

Name Date

Read and Think

This chapter is the heart of the Chronicler's family lists, because it traces the royal house of David. Verses 1-9 name nineteen sons of David, six born in Hebron during his seven and a half years there and the rest born in Jerusalem during his thirty-three years there. Their sister Tamar is also named.

Verses 10-16 move quickly through the kings of Judah, more than four hundred years of history in a few lines. Good kings like Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah are listed beside kings who did evil, without comment. The line seems to end when Jeconiah, the captive, is carried away.

Yet verses 17-24 show that the family did not end. Shealtiel, Zerubbabel, and many grandchildren carry David's line on after the exile. In the New Testament, Matthew 1:12-16 continues this same family from Jeconiah and Zerubbabel all the way to Jesus, the promised Son of David.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is this chapter the heart of the family lists?

  2. How many years did David reign in Jerusalem?

  3. How much history do verses 10-16 cover?

  4. Who is called the captive?

  5. How does Matthew 1:12-16 connect to this chapter?
