1 Chronicles 3 · Grade 5
God Keeps the Line of David
Read and Think
This chapter is the heart of the Chronicler's family lists, because it traces the royal house of David. Verses 1-9 name nineteen sons of David, six born in Hebron during his seven and a half years there and the rest born in Jerusalem during his thirty-three years there. Their sister Tamar is also named.
Verses 10-16 move quickly through the kings of Judah, more than four hundred years of history in a few lines. Good kings like Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah are listed beside kings who did evil, without comment. The line seems to end when Jeconiah, the captive, is carried away.
Yet verses 17-24 show that the family did not end. Shealtiel, Zerubbabel, and many grandchildren carry David's line on after the exile. In the New Testament, Matthew 1:12-16 continues this same family from Jeconiah and Zerubbabel all the way to Jesus, the promised Son of David.

When Judah went into exile, it may have seemed God's promise to David was over. How does this chapter answer that fear?
The Chronicler lists good and evil kings side by side. How does that remind us that our hope rests on God, not on leaders?
