Given Willingly

Read the Story

David gave his own treasure of gold and silver for God's house. He asked who else would offer willingly. The leaders gave gold, silver, bronze, iron, and precious stones.

The people rejoiced because they gave willingly with a perfect heart. David blessed Yahweh. He said all that is in the heavens and earth is God's. Riches and honor come from him.

David wondered who he was, that the people could give like this. All things come from you, and we have given you of your own. The people worshiped. Solomon became king, and David died at a good old age.

Of Your Own We Have Given

Name Date

Read and Think

David told the assembly that Solomon was young and the work was great, for the palace was not for man but for Yahweh God. Because he had set his affection on God's house, David gave his own treasure of gold and silver. Then he asked who would offer willingly to consecrate himself today to Yahweh.

The leaders of families, tribes, and the army offered willingly: gold, silver, bronze, iron, and precious stones. The people rejoiced because they gave with a perfect heart, and David rejoiced with great joy (29:9).

David blessed Yahweh before all the assembly. Yours, Yahweh, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty, for all in heaven and earth is yours. He confessed that all things come from God, and the people had only given back what was His. The next day they made Solomon king. David died full of days, riches, and honor.

Yours Is the Kingdom

Name Date

Read and Think

First Chronicles ends with worship. David reminded the assembly that the temple was not for man but for Yahweh God. Out of love for God's house, he gave his own treasure, then asked who would consecrate himself willingly to Yahweh. The leaders and people responded with gold, silver, bronze, iron, and precious stones, and they rejoiced because they had given willingly.

David's prayer in verses 10-19 is one of the great prayers of the Bible. It praises God's greatness, power, glory, victory, and majesty, for the kingdom is Yahweh's and he is exalted as head above all. Then David turned humble and asked who he and his people were, that they should offer so willingly. He said that all things come from God, and they had given Him only what was already His. He said that their days on earth are like a shadow.

David knew that God tests the heart and delights in uprightness. He prayed that God would keep this desire in the hearts of his people and give Solomon a perfect heart. All the assembly blessed Yahweh. Solomon was anointed king a second time, and David died full of days, riches, and honor. In the New Testament, Paul writes that God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Think About It

  1. David's prayer begins with God's greatness and then turns humble. How can praising God's greatness help you stay humble?

  2. David asked God to keep the people's hearts willing. What would you ask God to keep in your heart for the rest of your life?

Memory Verse

“I know also, my God, that you try the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things. Now I have seen with joy your people, who are present here, offer willingly to you.”
