A Charge to Solomon

Name Date

Read and Think

David assembled all the princes, captains, and officers of Israel at Jerusalem. He stood and told them he had wanted to build a house of rest for the ark, but God said he was a man of war. Of all David's sons, God had chosen Solomon to sit on the throne of Yahweh's kingdom and to build his house.

David charged Israel, in the sight of Yahweh's assembly, to keep and seek all God's commandments. Then he turned to Solomon. Know the God of your father, he said, and serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind, for Yahweh searches all hearts. If you seek him, he will be found by you.

David gave Solomon the plans for the temple, its rooms, its courts, and the divisions of priests and Levites. He said all of it had been made clear in writing from Yahweh's hand. Then he said, Be strong and courageous, and do it. David told Solomon not to be afraid, for Yahweh God was with him. He will not fail you nor forsake you (28:20).

A Whole Heart and a Willing Mind

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 28 is David's public charge before his death. He gathered every leader of Israel and explained God's choice. God had chosen Judah, then David's family, then David, and now Solomon from among his many sons to sit on the throne of Yahweh's kingdom. The kingdom was God's, and the king was his servant.

David charged both the people and Solomon. He told the people to observe and seek out all the commandments of Yahweh their God, so they could keep the good land and leave it to their children. He told Solomon to know the God of his father and serve Him with a perfect heart and a willing mind, for Yahweh searches all hearts. David said that if Solomon sought God, He would be found, but if Solomon forsook Him, God would cast him off forever.

David handed Solomon the plans that he had by the Spirit, including the gold and silver for each vessel. Like Moses, David received the pattern from God. His final words echo Joshua's commissioning: he told Solomon to be strong and courageous and not to be afraid, because God would not fail him. In the New Testament, Hebrews repeats this promise for all believers: I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
