A Kingdom in Order

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 27 shows how David organized his kingdom. The army had twelve divisions of twenty-four thousand men, one for each month of the year. Their captains included famous mighty men from chapter 11, such as Benaiah and Asahel.

Each tribe of Israel had a ruler. David did not number those twenty years old and under, because Yahweh had said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky (27:23). Joab began to count but did not finish. The number was not written in the king's records.

Stewards cared for the king's things. They kept the treasure, the fields, the vineyards, the trees, the oil, the herds, the camels, and the flocks. Jonathan, David's uncle, was a counselor and scribe. Ahithophel was the king's counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king's friend.

1 Chronicles 27 · Grade 5

Stewards of a Promise

Name Date

Read and Think

This chapter looks like a list, but it shows a kingdom ordered for peace. Twelve divisions of twenty-four thousand rotated month by month, so no one carried the burden all year. The captains were the same mighty men who had stood with David from the start, including Benaiah, who was mighty among the thirty.

Each tribe had a ruler, and the Chronicler adds a pointed note. David did not count those twenty years old and under, because Yahweh had promised to increase Israel like the stars of the sky. Joab began to count but did not finish, and wrath came on Israel; the total was never written in the chronicles of King David. The lesson of chapter 21 was remembered.

The last section lists the stewards of the king's property: treasuries, fields, vineyards, wine cellars, olive and sycamore trees, oil, herds, camels, and flocks. David also had counselors: Jonathan his uncle, a man of understanding; Ahithophel the counselor; and Hushai, the king's friend. A good kingdom needs faithful managers and true friends.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the divisions rotate month by month?

  2. Who was mighty among the thirty?

  3. Why was the total never written in the chronicles?

  4. Which earlier lesson was remembered?

  5. What two things does a good kingdom need?

  2. Sharing the work month by month kept the army from wearing out. How can you share work fairly with others?

Memory Verse

“Joab the son of Zeruiah began to take a census, but didn’t finish; and wrath came on Israel for this. The number wasn’t put into the account in the chronicles of King David.”
