1 Chronicles 26 · Grade 5
Faithful Gatekeepers
Read and Think
Chapter 26 turns to the doorkeepers, the guardians of the gates of Yahweh's house. They came from the families of Korah and Merari. The Chronicler notes that God blessed Obed-Edom, the man who sheltered the ark in chapter 13, with eight sons and sixty-two able descendants.
The gates were assigned by lot to the small as well as the great. Shelemiah received the east gate, his son Zechariah, a wise counselor, received the north, Obed-Edom the south, and Shuppim and Hosah the west. The guards stood watchman opposite watchman, so every side was kept.
Levites also guarded the treasuries, which held gifts dedicated by leaders from Samuel to David to repair Yahweh's house. Others served across Israel as officers and judges, for every matter pertaining to God and for the affairs of the king. Worship and daily life were both served by faithful Levites.

Think About It
Obed-Edom welcomed the ark, and later his family served at the gates. How might faithfulness in one generation bless the next?
Some Levites served God by judging fairly in ordinary life. How can you serve God in everyday matters, not only at church?
Memory Verse
“Of these were the divisions of the doorkeepers, even of the chief men, having offices like their brothers, to minister in Yahweh’s house.”
