Skill Offered in Worship

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 25 organizes the musicians, set apart by David and the captains of the army. The sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun were to prophesy with harps, stringed instruments, and cymbals. Their music was not mere performance. It declared God's word in thanks and praise, as Jeduthun prophesied in giving thanks and praising Yahweh.

Heman, the king's seer, received fourteen sons and three daughters according to God's promise to lift up his horn. All of them served under their father for song in Yahweh's house. Family, talent, and calling came together, under the order of the king.

Two hundred eighty-eight skilled singers were divided into twenty-four groups of twelve, matching the twenty-four divisions of priests. They cast lots, the small as well as the great, the teacher as well as the student (25:8). Skill mattered, but it did not create rank before God. In the New Testament, Paul tells believers to speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19).

Show What You Know

  1. Who set apart the musicians?

  2. What did the music declare?

  3. How many children did God give Heman?

  4. What did the twenty-four groups match?

  5. What does Paul tell believers in Ephesians 5:19?
