Memory Verse

“Thus they were divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were princes of the sanctuary and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.”

Divided by Lot

Name Date

Read the Story

Aaron had four sons. Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.

David, Zadok, and Ahimelech divided the priests for their service. They made twenty-four groups. They drew lots so the choice was fair, for there were princes of God from both families.

Shemaiah the scribe wrote down the names in front of the king and the princes. Each group would come into Yahweh's house in its turn. The other Levites also cast lots, the oldest and the youngest families alike.

Memory Verse

“Thus they were divided impartially by drawing lots; for there were princes of the sanctuary and princes of God, both of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.”

A Fair Plan for Service

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 24 sets the priests, the sons of Aaron, in order. Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests. Eleazar's family had more chief men. So it had sixteen groups, and Ithamar's had eight.

They were divided fairly by drawing lots. Both families had princes of God (24:5). Shemaiah the scribe wrote the names down before the king, the princes, Zadok, and Ahimelech.

Each of the twenty-four groups had its turn to come into Yahweh's house. The rest of the Levites also cast lots in front of King David. The family of the chief was treated the same as the family of the youngest.

Every Family Serves

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 24 lists twenty-four divisions of priests from the sons of Aaron. Because Nadab and Abihu had died with no children, the priesthood came through Eleazar and Ithamar. Eleazar's line had more chief men, so it received sixteen divisions to Ithamar's eight. Zadok represented Eleazar's family, and Ahimelech represented Ithamar's.

The divisions were assigned impartially by lot. Both families had princes of the sanctuary and princes of God, so no one could claim the best turns by rank. Shemaiah the scribe recorded every name in front of the king and leaders. This order lasted for centuries; in the New Testament, Zechariah served in the division of Abijah, the eighth group (Luke 1:5).

The chapter closes with the remaining Levites casting lots in the same way. The fathers' households of the chief were treated even as those of his younger brother (24:31). In God's house, rank did not decide who served when. Each family took its turn before Yahweh.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the priesthood come through Eleazar and Ithamar?

  2. Who represented Eleazar's family?

  3. Why were lots used?

  4. Which division did Zechariah serve in?

  5. What did not decide who served when?

“These likewise cast lots even as their brothers the sons of Aaron in the presence of David the king, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of the fathers’ households of the priests and of the Levites, the fathers’ households of the chief even as those of his younger brother.”
