1 Chronicles 23 · Grade 5
Order for Worship
Read and Think
Chapters 23-27 show David organizing the people for worship and service in his last days. He made Solomon king and gathered the princes, priests, and Levites. Thirty-eight thousand Levites from thirty years old upward were counted and assigned. Twenty-four thousand would oversee the work of Yahweh's house, six thousand were officers and judges, four thousand were doorkeepers, and four thousand praised Yahweh with instruments.
The Levites were grouped by Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Aaron and his sons were separated forever to sanctify the most holy things, to burn incense, and to bless in Yahweh's name. The sons of Moses, though the great lawgiver's family, served as ordinary Levites.
Verses 25-32 explain the shift. Yahweh had given rest to his people, and he dwells in Jerusalem forever. The Levites no longer needed to carry the tabernacle and its vessels. Their new service was to wait on the priests, to care for the holy things, the show bread, and the offerings, and to stand every morning and evening to thank and praise Yahweh.
