1 Chronicles 22 · Grade 5
Building for the Next Generation
Read and Think
Chapter 22 begins a long section in which David prepares for the temple. He named Ornan's threshing floor as the house of Yahweh and the altar of burnt offering. He organized stone cutters and gathered iron, bronze, and cedar in abundance, for the Sidonians and Tyrians brought much cedar wood to David.
David explained to Solomon why he could not build. God had told him that he had shed much blood and made great wars. But God promised a son who would be a man of rest, and his name, Solomon, sounds like the Hebrew word for peace. God would give peace and quietness to Israel in his days, and that son would build the house.
David's charge to Solomon mirrors Moses' charge to Joshua: be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid or dismayed. In his affliction, David had stored up enormous treasure, and Solomon could add to it. David told the princes that God had given them rest on every side. Now they must set their heart and soul to seek Yahweh and build the sanctuary for the ark.
