1 Chronicles 20 · Grade 5
The Victory Continues
Read and Think
Chapter 20 completes the war with Ammon. At the time when kings go out, Joab led the army, besieged Rabbah, and overthrew it, while David stayed at Jerusalem. David received the king's crown of gold and precious stones.
Verses 4-8 tell of three battles with the Philistines against descendants of the giant at Gath. Sibbecai defeated Sippai, Elhanan defeated Lahmi the brother of Goliath, and Jonathan son of Shimea defeated a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, who defied Israel.
The last verse sums it up: these were born to the giant in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and his servants. The story that began when young David faced Goliath ends with his servants finishing the work. The enemies who once terrified Israel were no longer a threat.
