Read the Story

This chapter starts with the names of the twelve sons of Israel. Some are Reuben, Levi, Judah, Joseph, and Benjamin. Then the list follows Judah's family.

Judah's family grew over many years. One man was Nahshon, a prince of the children of Judah. Later came Boaz, then Obed, then Jesse.

Jesse had seven sons, and David was the seventh. David's sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The list also names Bezalel, who was in Caleb's family.

1 Chronicles 2 · Grade 4

From Judah to David

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 2 begins with the twelve sons of Israel. Then it turns to Judah, the tribe that would become the royal tribe. Judah's son Er was wicked in Yahweh's sight, and the line continued through Perez and Zerah, sons born to Tamar (2:3-4).

The list follows Perez to Hezron and Ram, then to Nahshon, a prince of Judah. Nahshon's line leads to Boaz, Obed, and Jesse. Jesse's sons are listed in order, ending with David the seventh (2:15).

Other branches of Hezron's family follow, including Caleb's family and Bezalel, the skilled worker in Exodus. In the New Testament, Matthew lists Boaz, Obed, and Jesse in the family line of Jesus (Matthew 1:5-6).

Show What You Know

  1. Which tribe would become the royal tribe?

  2. Through whom did Judah's line continue?

  3. Who was a prince of Judah?

  4. Which son of Jesse was David?

  5. In the New Testament, who does Matthew 1:5-6 list in Jesus' family line?

Think About It

  1. God worked through ordinary families over many years to bring David. How does that encourage you when God's plans seem slow?

  2. The family list includes people who did wrong as well as people who did right. What does that show about God's grace?

Memory Verse

“Tamar his daughter-in-law bore him Perez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.”

The Royal Line

Name Date

Read and Think

After listing Israel's twelve sons, the Chronicler gives most of his attention to Judah. That choice makes sense, because Judah was the tribe of King David. The chapter does not hide hard parts of the story: Er was wicked in Yahweh's sight (2:3), and Achar is called the troubler of Israel (2:7).

The main line runs from Perez through Hezron and Ram to Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah, and then to Salma, Boaz, Obed, and Jesse. Jesse's sons are counted one by one, Eliab first and David the seventh. David's sister Zeruiah is named as the mother of Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, who later served in David's army.

The rest of the chapter traces other branches of Hezron's family, such as Jerahmeel and Caleb. Bezalel, who built the tabernacle, came from Caleb's family through Hur. In the New Testament, Matthew 1:3-6 follows this same line from Perez to David on the way to Jesus.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does the Chronicler focus on Judah?

  2. What two hard parts of the story are named?

  3. Who was David's sister and the mother of Joab?

  4. Who built the tabernacle and came from Caleb's family?

  5. Which New Testament passage follows this line?

Think About It

  1. The Chronicler did not hide the wrong done in Judah's family. Why is it good that the Bible tells the truth about people?

  2. God kept His promise through generation after generation. How can you remember God's faithfulness in your own family?
