1 Chronicles 2 · Grade 4
From Judah to David
Read and Think
Chapter 2 begins with the twelve sons of Israel. Then it turns to Judah, the tribe that would become the royal tribe. Judah's son Er was wicked in Yahweh's sight, and the line continued through Perez and Zerah, sons born to Tamar (2:3-4).
The list follows Perez to Hezron and Ram, then to Nahshon, a prince of Judah. Nahshon's line leads to Boaz, Obed, and Jesse. Jesse's sons are listed in order, ending with David the seventh (2:15).
Other branches of Hezron's family follow, including Caleb's family and Bezalel, the skilled worker in Exodus. In the New Testament, Matthew lists Boaz, Obed, and Jesse in the family line of Jesus (Matthew 1:5-6).

God worked through ordinary families over many years to bring David. How does that encourage you when God's plans seem slow?
The family list includes people who did wrong as well as people who did right. What does that show about God's grace?

“Tamar his daughter-in-law bore him Perez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.”
