Kindness and Courage

Name Date

Read and Think

When Nahash king of Ammon died, David said he would show kindness to Hanun his son, because his father had shown kindness to him. He sent servants to comfort Hanun. But the princes of Ammon told Hanun that David's men had come to search the land as spies.

Hanun believed them. He shamed David's servants and sent them away. When David heard, he sent to meet them and told them to stay at Jericho until their beards had grown. Then Ammon realized they had made themselves odious to David and hired chariots and soldiers from Syria.

Joab saw the battle set against him in front and behind. He chose the best men to face the Syrians and gave the rest to Abishai to face Ammon. They agreed to help each other. Joab said, Be courageous, and let's be strong for our people and for the cities of our God (19:13). The Syrians and the Ammonites fled.

Strength Without Presumption

Name Date

Read and Think

The chapter opens with an act of kindness. David remembered the kindness of Nahash and sent comforters to his son Hanun. But Ammon's princes suspected a trick, and Hanun humiliated David's servants. David protected their dignity by letting them wait at Jericho until their beards had grown.

Ammon then hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people. Joab found the enemy set against him on two sides. He divided the army with his brother Abishai, and they agreed that whichever side was stronger would help the other.

Joab's words in verse 13 are a model of faith: he told the army to be courageous and strong for their people and the cities of their God, and to let Yahweh do what seemed good to him. He fought hard but left the outcome in God's hands. The Syrians fled before Joab, Ammon fled before Abishai, and later the Syrians would no longer help Ammon.
