1 Chronicles 19 · Grade 5
Strength Without Presumption
Read and Think
The chapter opens with an act of kindness. David remembered the kindness of Nahash and sent comforters to his son Hanun. But Ammon's princes suspected a trick, and Hanun humiliated David's servants. David protected their dignity by letting them wait at Jericho until their beards had grown.
Ammon then hired thirty-two thousand chariots and the king of Maacah with his people. Joab found the enemy set against him on two sides. He divided the army with his brother Abishai, and they agreed that whichever side was stronger would help the other.
Joab's words in verse 13 are a model of faith: he told the army to be courageous and strong for their people and the cities of their God, and to let Yahweh do what seemed good to him. He fought hard but left the outcome in God's hands. The Syrians fled before Joab, Ammon fled before Abishai, and later the Syrians would no longer help Ammon.
