1 Chronicles 18 · Grade 5
Victory Given, Treasure Dedicated
Read and Think
Chapter 18 summarizes David's wars as proof that God was keeping his word. The Philistines, Moab, Zobah, Damascus, and Edom all came under David's rule. Twice the Chronicler says the same thing: Yahweh gave victory to David wherever he went. The success belonged to God, not only to David's skill.
The chapter also shows what David did with his gains. The shields of gold, the bronze from Hadadezer's cities, and the gifts of Tou king of Hamath were all dedicated to Yahweh, along with silver and gold from every nation he subdued. Verse 8 notes that Solomon used this bronze for the bronze sea, the pillars, and the vessels of the temple.
David's victories prepared materials for a temple he would never build. Verse 14 adds the moral center of his kingdom: David executed justice and righteousness for all his people. Power, wealth, and justice were all turned toward God's purposes.
