1 Chronicles 17 · Grade 5
The Forever Throne
Read and Think
David's desire was good: he lived in cedar while the ark of the covenant was in a tent. But God's answer through Nathan reversed the idea. David would not build God a house; God would build David a house. God had taken him from following the sheep, had been with him everywhere, and would make his name like the great ones of the earth.
The heart of the promise is in verses 11-14. When David's days were fulfilled, God would raise up his offspring after him and establish his kingdom. That son would build God's house, God would be his father, and he would be God's son. God would settle him in God's house and kingdom forever, and his throne would be established forever.
Solomon fulfilled part of this, but his throne did not last forever. The promise looked further ahead. In the New Testament, the angel tells Mary that God will give Jesus the throne of his father David, and of his kingdom there will be no end (Luke 1:32-33). David's humble prayer in verses 16-27 rests on this promise.
