A House That Lasts

Name Date

Read and Think

David noticed that he lived in a cedar house while the ark of Yahweh's covenant was in a tent. Nathan first told him to do all that was in his heart. But that night God's word came to Nathan: David was not the one to build God a house.

Instead, God made a promise. He reminded David that he took him from the sheep pen to be prince over his people Israel. God would build David a house, not of cedar but of family. One of David's sons would build God's house, and God would establish his throne forever.

David went in and sat before Yahweh. He asked, Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far? (17:16). He praised God that there is no one like him, and he asked God to do as he had spoken.
