1 Chronicles 16 · Grade 5
Thanks Among the Nations
Read and Think
The ark's arrival ends in worship and generosity. David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, blessed the people in Yahweh's name, and gave every man and woman bread, meat, and raisins. Then he appointed Levites to minister before the ark, to celebrate, thank, and praise Yahweh, the God of Israel.
The psalm in verses 8-36 draws on Psalms 105, 96, and 106. It begins with Israel's own story: remember his marvelous works and his covenant with Abraham, when they were few in number. Then it widens to all the earth, telling the nations to declare his glory, for all the gods of the peoples are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.
It closes with thanks and a prayer: Oh give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever. The people asked the God of their salvation to save them and gather them from the nations. For the first readers, back from exile, this was their own prayer. In the New Testament, Jesus sends his followers to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).
