Carried on Their Shoulders

Name Date

David built houses in his city. He also set up a tent for God's ark. He said that no one ought to carry the ark but the Levites, because Yahweh had chosen them.

David told the Levites that they had not carried it at first, and they had not sought God the right way. So the priests and Levites made themselves holy. They carried the ark on their shoulders with its poles, as Moses commanded.

David chose singers with harps, cymbals, and trumpets. Chenaniah taught the singers because he was skillful. All Israel brought the ark up with shouting. David danced, but Michal looked out the window and did not like it.

Doing It God's Way

Name Date

Read and Think

After three months, David tried again to bring the ark to Jerusalem. He set up a tent for it. This time he said that no one ought to carry God's ark but the Levites, for Yahweh had chosen them to carry it and to minister to him forever (15:2).

David admitted the earlier mistake. Because they did not carry it at first, and did not seek God according to the ordinance, Yahweh broke out against them. So the priests and Levites sanctified themselves, and they bore the ark on their shoulders with its poles, as Moses commanded.

David chose singers with harps, cymbals, and trumpets. They lifted up their voices with joy. All Israel brought the ark of the covenant up with shouting. But Michal the daughter of Saul saw King David dancing and playing, and she despised him in her heart.

Joy That Follows Obedience

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 15 corrects chapter 13. David again prepared a place for God's ark, but now he gathered the priests and Levites and explained what went wrong. Yahweh had broken out against them because they did not seek him according to the ordinance. The Levites sanctified themselves and carried the ark on their shoulders with its poles, as Moses commanded according to Yahweh's word.

Worship was organized with care. David told the chiefs of the Levites to appoint singers with stringed instruments, harps, and cymbals, lifting up their voices with joy. Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, taught the singing because he was skillful. Doorkeepers guarded the ark, and priests blew the trumpets before it.

Because God helped the Levites, they offered sacrifices. All Israel brought the ark up with shouting and music. Only one person did not rejoice. Michal saw King David dancing and playing, and despised him in her heart. The same event that filled Israel with joy revealed a cold heart in her.
