1 Chronicles 14 · Grade 5
The King Who Seeks God
Read and Think
This chapter is a sharp contrast with Saul, who did not inquire of Yahweh. Hiram of Tyre honored David with cedar and craftsmen for a house. David perceived that Yahweh had established him, and that his kingdom was exalted for his people Israel's sake. Power was a trust, not a prize.
When the Philistines heard David was anointed king, they came to search for him. David inquired of God whether to go up, and God promised to deliver them into his hand. At Baal Perazim, David said God had broken his enemies like a breach of waters. The Philistines left their gods there, and they were burned with fire.
When they raided again, David inquired again. God gave a new plan: circle behind them and wait until the sound of marching in the mulberry trees, for God would go out before him. David did as God commanded, and they struck the Philistines from Gibeon to Gezer. Yahweh brought the fear of David on all nations.
