Joy Without Obedience

Name Date

Read and Think

David consulted with every leader. He proposed bringing God's ark back, for they had not sought it in the days of Saul (13:3). The whole assembly agreed, because it was right in the eyes of all the people. David gathered Israel from the river of Egypt to Hamath.

They carried God's ark on a new cart from Abinadab's house. David and all Israel played before God with all their might, with songs, harps, and trumpets. At Chidon's threshing floor the oxen stumbled, and Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark. Yahweh's anger burned against him, and Yahweh struck him, and he died there before God.

David was displeased, and he was afraid of God that day. He asked how he could bring God's ark home. So he carried it aside into the house of Obed-Edom, where it stayed three months. Yahweh blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that he had.

1 Chronicles 13 · Grade 5

The Holy Presence of God

Name Date

Read and Think

Chronicles places this chapter right after David becomes king, showing that his first concern was the ark of God. He consulted with the leaders and the whole assembly, saying they had not sought it in the days of Saul. All the people agreed, and Israel gathered from the river of Egypt to the entrance of Hamath.

The celebration was sincere. David and all Israel played before God with all their might, with songs, harps, cymbals, and trumpets. But they carried the ark on a new cart, not on the shoulders of the Levites as God's law required. When the oxen stumbled, Uzza reached out to hold the ark, and Yahweh struck him, and he died there before God.

David was displeased and afraid. He asked how he could bring God's ark home to him. The ark went into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and Yahweh blessed his house and all that he had. In chapter 15, David will learn from this and carry the ark God's way.

  1. What was David's first concern as king?

  2. How did Israel celebrate?

  3. How should the ark have been carried?

  4. What did David ask after Uzza died?
