A King Who Shepherds

Name Date

Read and Think

After Saul's fall, all Israel gathered to David at Hebron and said they were his bone and his flesh. They remembered that Yahweh had told him he would shepherd Israel and be prince over them. David made a covenant with the elders before Yahweh, and they anointed him king according to the word of Yahweh by Samuel.

David then took the stronghold of Zion from the Jebusites, and it became David's city. He built the city around, and Joab repaired the rest. The Chronicler sums up the secret of his rise in verse 9: David grew greater and greater, for Yahweh of Armies was with him.

The mighty men show the loyalty around David. When he longed for water from Bethlehem, three men broke through the Philistines to bring it. David poured it out to Yahweh, refusing to drink what had cost their lives. In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep (John 10:11).
